Congratulations to the winners!
This Inter School Essay Writing Competition is a joint effort of Himalayan Readers’ Bookclub and Nepal Library Foundation to aware youths about Food Insecurity due to current trend of food waste and loss i.e., 1.3 billion tons of food is either being lost or wasted every year according to FAO’s data. This is a campaign for reducing our foodprint to end hunger meanwhile reducing pressure on ecology to produce more food mere to waste!
An hour and fifteen minutes’ time was allotted for writing 600-800 words’ essay. There were two categories; English and Nepali. Four awards; First, Second, Third and Fourth were allotted in each category. The essays were evaluated by a panel of jury and the winners were declared on the same day. Meanwhile, the essay writing segment was followed by refreshment, docu-talks and photo stories based on food security, presentations by organizers and event partners, and recreational art events for the participants.
For the essay writing segment, one had to be a secondary level student i.e., currently studying in either grade nine or ten. S/he had to fill up application form get consent from his/her school and apply. Altogether 103 students from different schools participated. For other segments like presentation of photo-story and participation in docutalks as well as art events other visitors were also involved.
As discussed earlier we had two categories for essay writing; English and Nepali. In each category the essays of participants were evaluated on the basis of use of language (40%) and content (60%). Comprehensive coverage, relevant perspectives, analytical and thoughtful insights, enlightening illustration using local, national and international examples, coherent and engaging discussion, displaying sensitivity, sophistication, awareness and maturity, and proper structure in essay were basis of judgment.
